What Weight Should Beginners Choose for Their First Steel-Tip Darts? Why 22g to 24g is the Safest Bet

For beginners buying their first set of steel-tip darts, 22g to 24g is widely recognized as the ideal starting point. This range is considered the "safest bet" based on three objective facts:

First, it strikes a balance between flight stability and control. Lighter darts (under 22g) require a faster release and more precise control, which easily amplifies any flaws in your throwing motion. Heavier darts (over 24g) fly more steadily but drop faster, demanding a specific throwing force. The 22–24g range falls right in the middle, meaning beginners won't have to forcefully alter their natural throwing technique just to accommodate the equipment.

Second, this weight range closely aligns with mainstream professional choices. The vast majority of seasoned players and professionals use darts weighing around 22–23g. Starting in the 22–24g range ensures you are practicing within industry-

standard technical parameters from day one, rather than adapting to a "niche" weight that would require a difficult transition later on.

Third, it leaves room for future adjustments. The difference in feel between 22g, 23g, and 24g is distinctly noticeable. By starting in this range, after a period of practice, you can easily fine-tune your setup by going 1–2g heavier for more stability or 1–2g lighter for a snappier feel. If you start with an extreme weight, it is incredibly difficult to tell whether your struggles are caused by poor technique or the wrong equipment.

Practical Advice: Start with 24g—this is one of the most commonly used specific weights for both beginners and long-time players alike. Use them for a few weeks of targeted practice, then analyze your dart grouping to determine if any fine-tuning is necessary.
