95% or 90% tungsten
which to choose when buying darts? That number often leaves people torn. Here's the short answer: 90% is the "sweet spot" for the vast majority of players, while 95% is the step up for those chasing maximum grouping.
What's the real difference? The higher the tungsten content, the thinner the barrel at the same weight. A 95% tungsten dart is slimmer than a 90% one, so it takes up less space on the board — making it easier for the second and third darts to squeeze into the treble. That's the one and only reason competitive players prefer it. But there's a cost: the higher the tungsten content, the more brittle the barrel. A 95% (or higher) barrel is far more likely to chip or even snap when it hits a hard floor. 90% strikes the balance between slenderness and durability — thin enough, yet tough enough. It's what the majority of players use on the pro tour.

Two misconceptions worth clearing up. First, tungsten content is not the same as feel. Grip and handling come down to the machining texture and weight distribution, and have nothing to do with tungsten percentage — don't assume 95% automatically means "better quality." Second, don't overlook weight consistency. Because high-tungsten barrels are harder to machine, there can be slight weight variations between individual darts of the same model, so it's best to weigh them yourself before buying. As for the top-tier 97% and 98% tungsten darts — those are for hardcore enthusiasts chasing the extreme; most players would struggle to feel any real difference from 95%.
Quick way to avoid the trap: if you're after maximum grouping and practice on carpet with floor protection, go 95%. If you want a durable, great-value dart that'll stay with you long-term, 90% won't steer you wrong. Don't be fooled by the numbers — the gap between 90% and 95% is "nitpicking," not night and day.
