The Difference Between Brass and Tungsten Darts: Why Beginners Should Start Directly with Tungsten

The most fundamental difference between the two lies in material density. Tungsten alloy has a density of approximately 19 g/cm³, while brass is around 8.5 g/cm³. For darts of the exact same weight, the diameter of a tungsten barrel is typically about half that of a brass one (for example, a 24g dart is roughly 6.5mm in tungsten versus 9.5mm in brass). This slimmer diameter means three darts take up less space on the dartboard, reducing the blocking effect and making it easier to improve grouping accuracy.


In terms of durability, brass is a softer metal. With long-term use (especially during high-frequency training), its grip texture easily wears down, altering how the dart feels in hand. Tungsten is much harder and retains its grip texture significantly better. Its physical properties ensure that the barrel's geometry remains essentially unchanged for years. This guarantees a consistent feel over time, which is highly beneficial for building muscle memory and solidifying your throwing technique.


The recommendation for beginners to choose tungsten darts is not based on looking for a "bargain" or "cost-effectiveness," but rather on the practical needs of skill development. A consistent weight distribution and an unchanging shape minimize the variables caused by equipment wear, allowing players to focus entirely on improving their throwing mechanics. Although tungsten darts generally cost more than brass, their longevity and performance stability make them a much more logical choice for beginners planning a long-term commitment to the game. For those on a tight budget, an entry-level dart with a solid tungsten content (such as 70%–80%) is perfectly adequate for basic needs—there is no need to splurge on top-tier models right away.
