Four Common Dart Barrel Shapes: Find Your Natural Grip

The shape of a dart barrel directly impacts your grip and how you apply force. There are four common barrel shapes on the market: straight, torpedo, barrel (bomb), and irregular.

Straight: With a uniform diameter like a pencil, this shape offers the most freedom for your grip—whether at the front, middle, or rear. If you tend to lightly pinch the dart with your thumb and index finger and frequently adjust your grip, the straight barrel is very forgiving. It is ideal for players who are still figuring out their preferred feel.

Torpedo: Thicker at the front and tapering toward the back, much like a pistol. The center of gravity is noticeably forward, and your fingers will naturally lock into place against the thicker front section. This shape suits a throwing style with a forward push, a crisp release, and a preference for the dart tip pointing slightly down upon impact. If you consistently grip the dart at the front, a torpedo shape usually feels the most natural.

Barrel (Bomb): Thicker in the middle and tapering at both ends, centering the weight right in the middle. The grip naturally falls on the thickest part, offering a fuller feel in the hand and a more secure, wrapped grip. It is suited for players who prefer a stable hold, have a compact throwing motion, and strive for consistent groupings.

Irregular: This includes unconventional designs with varying diameters, scallops, waves, or uneven weight distribution. Your grip is dictated by the dart's unique contours rather than a standard rule. These are best for experienced players who already know their grip preferences and want to experiment with specialized shapes. Beginners without a consistent throwing motion can easily have their technique negatively influenced by these contoured designs.

The method for choosing is simple: pick up a dart, hold it naturally, and see where your fingers naturally rest. A straight barrel gives you the freedom to choose your grip, while torpedo, barrel, and irregular shapes will physically guide your fingers. Determining your natural grip position before selecting a barrel shape is far more effective than blindly following trends.
